PB Planet Spotlight: The Retired Kid

Big PB Planet applause for The Retired Kid by Jon Agee (Hyperion Books for Children, Disney Book Group, 2008). When eight-year-old Brian announces he needs a break from the hard work of being a kid, his parents think he’s joking—until he moves to Florida’s Happy Sunset Retirement Community. But when Brian discovers there’s more to retirement than just golf and long afternoon naps, he begins to long for his “good old days,” hard work or not. Agee’s almost-deadpan text delivery is tremendously funny, and the clever illustrations reveal a new visual joke (such as Brian’s “retired” rising waistband) with each re-read. Zoom on over to your local bookstore and bring it back to your home planet today.
